Matt Hardy reveals Tony Khan’s dislike for “Broken” gimmick led to “Big Money” Matt persona in AEW

Matt Hardy, a former AEW star, recently explained why he changed his wrestling persona from “Broken” Matt Hardy to “Big Money” Matt during his time with the company. Hardy debuted in AEW during the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing back his popular “Broken” character for the Stadium Stampede match at Double or Nothing 2020. However, this gimmick was short-lived.

On his podcast, Hardy revealed that AEW’s Tony Khan wasn’t particularly fond of the “Broken” character. As a result, Hardy transitioned to the “Big Money” Matt persona, which focused on boasting about his wealth and success in the wrestling industry. This change occurred after his feud with Sammy Guevara ended and a new rivalry with Hangman Page began. Hardy noted that the shift to “Big Money” Matt was already in motion following The Elite Deletion event.

Later in his AEW run, Matt was joined by his brother Jeff Hardy, aiming to cement their legacy as one of wrestling’s greatest tag teams. Despite their goal of winning the AEW Tag Team Championship before retiring, the Hardys were unable to capture the titles and ultimately left the company in 2024.
