AJ Styles, a prominent figure in the world of professional wrestling, has had a storied career spanning multiple promotions. However, not all of his storylines have been well-received by fans and critics alike. One such storyline that stands out is the infamous Claire Lynch angle from his time in TNA (now known as Impact Wrestling).

During a recent episode of his “Extreme Life of Matt Hardy” podcast, Matt Hardy shed light on the controversial storyline and its impact on Styles’ career. Hardy, who worked alongside Styles in TNA, revealed that the angle, which portrayed Styles as a deadbeat dad and involved an alleged affair with then-TNA boss Dixie Carter, was not well-received by the wrestler himself. “AJ, a very merry guy with many children, much like me, has a gaggle, and you know, he had no interest in doing these romance or even teases of like having some sort of romance or some child out of wedlock,” Hardy said. He further speculated that Styles was likely “frustrated” with the angle, given his dedication to being a loyal husband and father in real life. Hardy also questioned the decision to put Styles in a “Sports Entertainment” angle, stating, “I would do something that is more in his wheelhouse because he speaks very proudly of being a very loyal husband and a loyal and loving father to his children. So, I feel like you’re doing yourself a disservice just by putting him in that position.” The podcast host also suggested that Styles likely fought with TNA Creative every night in order to navigate the uncomfortable storyline.

The Claire Lynch storyline, which ended abruptly and failed to deliver a satisfying conclusion, remains a controversial chapter in Styles’ career. Despite the setback, Styles has since gone on to achieve great success in WWE, cementing his status as one of the top performers in the industry. As Hardy’s comments suggest, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of aligning storylines with a performer’s personal values and strengths to ensure the best possible outcome for all involved.
