WWE Shifts Focus to Athletic Ability in Women’s Wrestling Recruitment, Predicts Strong Future Lineup
WWE has significantly changed its approach to recruiting female wrestlers over the past decade. Previously, the company focused mainly on looks when selecting women for their roster. Now, they prioritize athletic ability alongside appearance.
Dave Meltzer, a wrestling industry expert, predicts that in five years, WWE will have a strong lineup of female talent from their developmental brand, NXT. He notes that historically, women’s wrestling has lagged behind men’s in terms of athletic ability, particularly in independent promotions. However, WWE’s new recruitment strategy is changing this.
The company now recruits both men and women from college and professional sports, as well as from independent wrestling circuits. This approach is expected to yield more athletically gifted performers, though Meltzer acknowledges that not all recruits will succeed.
Meltzer mentions that while some women in NXT are ready for the main roster shows like Raw and SmackDown, others, such as Sol Ruca and Kelani Jordan, still need time to develop. He believes these athletes have great potential and could become significant stars in the future.
This shift in recruitment strategy is part of WWE’s ongoing effort to improve the quality and prominence of women’s wrestling, building on the success of their “Women’s Revolution” initiative.
