Ronda Rousey defends disappointing SummerSlam match, reveals WWE return motivations and backstage conflicts
Ronda Rousey’s final WWE match against Shayna Baszler at SummerSlam 2023 was met with disappointment from fans. In a recent interview, Rousey explained that the MMA Rules match wasn’t designed for a typical wrestling audience. She acknowledged that the match was filled with MMA references and historical moments that only hardcore MMA fans would appreciate, describing it as a defiant farewell to WWE.
Rousey revealed that her initial return to WWE was motivated by the prospect of a one-on-one match with Becky Lynch. When that plan fell through, she proposed a storyline where she would team up with Baszler, then turn on her before leaving the company. Rousey stated that she used her influence to secure the match with Baszler, expressing her desire to wrestle with her friend and help elevate Baszler’s career before departing.
Interestingly, Rousey mentioned that former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon was against the idea of Rousey and Baszler working together. McMahon reportedly believed that fans were unaware of their real-life friendship, which led to resistance in allowing them to collaborate in the ring.
