NFL Legend Walter Payton’s Surprise Appearance at 1994 SummerSlam Praised by WWE Executive
The 1994 SummerSlam event in Chicago featured an unexpected star: NFL legend Walter Payton. The Chicago Bears icon appeared in Razor Ramon’s corner during his Intercontinental Championship match against Diesel. Payton played a crucial role in helping Ramon regain the title by fending off interference from Shawn Michaels.
Bruce Prichard, speaking on a podcast, praised Payton’s involvement in the event. He mentioned that Payton helped the wrestlers remember their moves and was a joy to work with, describing him as punctual, enthusiastic, and respectful of the wrestling world. Prichard highlighted Payton’s contribution to making the match between Razor Ramon and Diesel a great success.
Interestingly, Payton wasn’t paid for his appearance at SummerSlam. Instead, the wrestling organization made a donation to Payton’s charity. Prichard explained that they had an existing relationship with Payton’s charitable foundation, and when offered the opportunity to participate in the Chicago event, Payton eagerly accepted without expecting payment.
