Chris Jericho reveals inspiration behind iconic WWE debut countdown clock 25 years later
In 1999, at the age of 29, Chris Jericho made a pivotal career move by leaving WCW and joining WWE. This transition marked the beginning of a nearly two-decade-long stint with WWE that would cement Jericho’s status as a future wrestling Hall of Famer. Recently, on his podcast “Talk is Jericho,” he reflected on this significant change in his career, which happened 25 years ago.
Jericho revealed that he was not only changing promotions but also looking to reinvent his character. The inspiration for his new WWE persona came from an unexpected source – a millennium countdown clock he saw at a post office in Clearwater, Florida. This chance encounter sparked an idea in Jericho’s mind about using a similar countdown concept for his WWE debut. The visual of a ticking clock counting down to his arrival became the foundation for one of the most memorable character introductions in WWE history.
