AEW Champion Swerve Strickland Honors Black Wrestling Icons Who Inspired His Journey
Swerve Strickland, the current AEW World Champion, recently discussed his wrestling influences. After becoming the first Black World Champion in AEW history by defeating Samoa Joe at Dynasty, Strickland aims to inspire young Black wrestlers worldwide.
In an interview with Complex, Strickland mentioned several Black wrestlers who paved the way for him. He particularly praised The New Day, especially Kofi Kingston, for their support and influence. Strickland expressed hope that he’s done justice to their legacy and made them proud.
Beyond The New Day, Strickland also named WWE legends Mark Henry and MVP as important influences. He described how his relationship with these wrestlers has evolved from seeing them as idols to now considering them peers and colleagues. Strickland feels he has earned his place in the conversation with these respected figures, noting that they’ve all made their mark in different eras of wrestling.
